Last year, the trainer shipped in Ramsey colorbearer Sisterhood to finish second in the Matron.

Exercise rider Joel Barrientos was aboard each colt. Of the three, Vicar’s in Trouble is the only one to race on an off track, and none of them has raced on a sloppy or muddy surface. Vicar’s in Trouble broke his maiden with a 13-length romp against 2-year-old Louisiana-bred company in a six-furlong race on a “good” track Dec. 14 at the Fair Grounds. “If the situation called for it, they’ve trained well over it, but as a whole, I don’t work my horses over an off track,” Maker said. “They haven’t run on it. There’s only one way to find out.”
4/26/14 - Mike sent out 2 of his three potential KY Derby starters to work recently, but he also sent LEADEM IN KEN to Fonner Park for Ken and Sarah Ramsey where he whistled in the Bosselman Pump & Pantry/Gus Fonner S and won off as he pleased by 9 lengths. He has earned $169,222.
4/23/14 - In other Derby news, trainer Mike Maker confirmed that Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Spiral Stakes (gr. III) runner-up Harry's Holiday will be pointed to the Derby. Maker potentially could saddle three horses in the race as he also is pointing Vicar's in Trouble and General a Rod to the classic.
4/19/14 - Vicar's in Trouble, the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) winner owned by Ken and Sarah K. Ramsey, worked five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 at the Churchill Downs training center April 19 in preparation for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). The work was the co-second fastest of 14 at the distance on a pleasant, sunny Saturday morning. "He worked very well and was well in hand," said trainer Mike Maker. "He had a nice gallop out which is what we were looking for and everything was perfect."

3/29/14 - Vicar's in Trouble bounced back to his winning form with a gate-to-wire victory in the $1 million G2 Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds. To add to the fun, HARRY'S HOLIDAY ran second in the G3- Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati Racing S.
3/22/14 - Mike on General a Rod:
“He’s the best chance I’ve ever had,” Maker said. “He just looks like the whole package to me. With past horses I’ve had the surface was questionable and so forth. Other than Hansen, they didn’t have a lot of speed, and he’s very tactical. He’s a lot bigger horse than I’ve had. It’s just a lot of good things.”General a Rod will make his next start in next Saturday’s $1 million Besilu Stables Florida Derby (G1), Gulfstream Park’s signature race and the premiere prep for the Triple Crown.
The 3-year-old son of Roman Ruler had his final work for the race on Sunday, timed in 1:01.54 for five furlongs on Gulfstream’s main track while recording the seventh fastest of 25 works at the distance. “He worked well,” Maker said. “A horse dropped in and wanted to work with him, but he handled it well, settled nice and did what we wanted. We were just going easy with him. The time was really insignificant.”
General a Rod raced on or near the lead in both his Gulfstream races, but Maker feels the horse isn’t one-dimensional. “I think just the way the track was playing, it kind of had to be that way,” he said. “If the situation calls for him to be forwardly placed, so be it. If we have to sit off it, that’s fine, too. Hopefully, somebody else will do the dirty work.”
Maker said General a Rod, owned by Venezuelan J. Armando Rodriguez, will school in the starting gate and gallop in the days leading up to the Florida Derby. “It’s going by fast,” he said. “We’re ready to go.”
